PALESTINE —

The City of Palestine will hold a general election May 10 to fill three expiring seats on the council, also holding a concurrent special election to fill the unexpired seat of a council member who recently passed away.

Races expiring this May include that of District 1, 3 and 5, currently held by Will Brule, Vickey L Chivers and Mark Price, respectively. Those seats have a term of office of two years — from May 2014 to May 2016.

Incumbent Will Brule did not file for reelection to his District 1 seat, with candidates Ricky Minton and Adam Harding facing off on the ballot in May.

Chivers and Price, who was appointed to the District 5 seat last year after its former seat-holder Therrell Thomas was elected mayor of Palestine, have both filed for re-election to the council. The election of those seats were canceled during a council meeting on Monday.

The special election is being held in conjunction with the general election for an unexpired term in District 4, held by the late James H. Yelverton, who passed away Feb. 17. That term will expire in May 2015, with whoever is elected to that seat having to run again at that time.

Three candidates have filed to run for the District 4 seat, including Joseph Thompson, Kenneth Davidson and Harvey Joe Baxter.

Early voting by personal appearance will be conducted from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays from Monday, April 28 to Tuesday, May 6 at City Hall, located at 504 N. Queen St. in Palestine. Extended hours of 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. will be on Tuesday, April 29 and Tuesday, May 6.

The regular election voting will take place from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, May 10 at Freedom Fellowship Church, 125 Kickapoo St. for District 1, and at Westwood Junior High School, 1801 Panther Dr. for District 4.

A sample ballot will be available at 3 p.m. today on the city website, www.cityofpalestinetx.com
