In conjunction with the Palestine Municipal Airport’s upcoming 80th anniversary in September, the Palestine Public Library and the City of Palestine have planned aviation-related talks, Aviation Art Contest and Art Days.
The library will host aviation-related programs at 5 p.m. every Thursday beginning Aug. 8.
The following programs are planned:
• Aug. 8 — Jerry Bell will explain how to obtain a pilot’s license.
• Aug. 15 — Timothy Triplett will explain how to identify aircraft and the meaning of tail numbers.
• Aug. 22 — Chuck Skinner will enlighten the public with the history and workings of air transportation in an air ambulance.
• Aug. 29 — The audience will have the opportunity to register to give the gift of life after a program on organ donation.
The Aviation Art Contest 2014 theme is “Flying to Save Lives.” The contest will be divided into four categories. The first three categories, ages 6-9, ages 10-13, and ages 14-18, will follow the TxDOT art contest rules and theme. The fourth category is open to any artist regardless of age working in any media type. The complete rules, the entry form, and more information are available at the library. Entries must be submitted by Monday, Sept. 16 to the Palestine Public Library at 2000 S. Loop 256, Suite 42 in the Mall.
Entries will be displayed at library with the public voting from Sept. 17-24. Winners will be announced on Saturday, Sept. 28 at the Municipal Airport during the anniversary celebrations. First prize in each category receives a free ride on an airplane!
Art Days will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. every Saturday now through Sept. 14 for anyone who is considering entering the art contest. Limited materials will be supplied, but participants may bring their own.
