Anderson County Special Education Co-op to host first field day Wednesday

PALESTINE — The Anderson County Special Education Co-op, who serves the needs of students at six Anderson County school districts, will hold its first-ever field day on Wednesday at the Jeff and Opal Austin Stadium in Frankston.

The meet take place from 9 a.m. to about 1 p.m., featuring students from all school districts with-in the Anderson County Special Education Co-Op. Planned events include foot races, jumps, team events and other calibrated track and field events especially designed for the participants.

“A number of supporters have donated time and funds to make this day happen,” Frankston High School coach, life skills teacher and field day coordinator Mark Chitty said. “Brookshire’s Grocery Co. assisted with the hotdogs that Frankston ISD trustees will be serving.

“We would like to see as many family, friends and community members as possible come out and support these special students on a very special day.”

Coach Josh Gilbert, assistant football coach and Elementary Life Skills teacher, is serving as competition coordinator for the field day.

“All of the Frankston High School student athletes and cheerleaders are coming together to serve as buddy-athletes to the participants during the field day,” Gilbert said. “It’s going to be a super experience for everyone.”

Chitty and Gilbert reported to the student body that because FISD student athletes have benefitted so much from athletics, this event would be an excellent avenue for all athletes to “give back to a community that has provided so much for them.”

Opening and closing ceremonies will take place at the field day. Participation ribbons and first- and second-place ribbons will be presented during the meet.

Water stations will be available for the participants and FISD board members are volunteering to cook hotdogs. Other concessions will be available as well.

Frankston Middle School cheerleaders will be on hand to provide school spirit; and the FHS band will perform in the stands during the meet.

Schools included in the Anderson County Special Education Co-Op are Cayuga, Elkhart, Frankston, Neches, Slocum and Westwood.
