PALESTINE — Compassion, selflessness, and one’s realm of influence were among topics discussed by a host of international leaders, authors and activists during a leadership conference broadcast live from Atlanta on Friday to hundreds of sites around the world, including Palestine.
Presented by the Palestine Area Chamber of Commerce, the 15th “Leadercast” simulcast event was viewed locally by 135 participants at the Ben E. Keith Community Room, located at 2019 W. Oak St. in Palestine.
Through a series of live discussions, artistic performances, montages and more, the event theme “Beyond You” highlighted ways for participants to lead with a posture and desire to live beyond themselves.
Leadership author and communicator Andy Stanley, founder of North Point Ministries Inc., kicked off the event with an overview of the theme. He said that creating a “beyond you” culture is about leveraging “your power and your influence for the sake of the people around you.”
Stanley pointed out an instance in his own life, when an older mentor encouraged and counseled him as a young leader still in his 20s. Accordingly, he encouraged listeners to look for “next generation leaders” and invest in them, even if there is no personal return.
“Beyond you leaders are those who fearlessly and selflessly empower leaders around them, as well as those coming behind them,” he said.
Stanley noted that the value of a life is “always measured in terms of how much of it was given away.”
“Every time you attend a funeral, you’re reminded of this,” he said. “At funerals, we never celebrate accumulation, do we? There’s never pictures of cars and houses… you celebrate how much of that life was given away. We celebrate generosity and selflessness.
“Ultimately the value of our leadership, as it is with our lives, will be measured in terms of what you gave away,” Stanley added.
