City, ISD early voting kicks off on Monday

PALESTINE — Early voting for the May 11 election begins Monday, with voters readying to decide the fate of candidates in city council and school board races in Anderson County.

Early voting for all respective entities concludes on Tuesday, May 7, with hours and locations varying.

There are two contested races for Palestine City Council this year — including that of outgoing mayor Bob Herrington and of the District 6 spot currently held by Steve Presley.

Presley will face local businessman Sam Aryanpur on the ballot for the District 6 spot, with current District 5 council member Therrell Thomas and local businessman Timothy Triplett vying for the city’s top spot as mayor.

The term of office for these positions is two years, from May 2013 to May 2015. Herrington previously announced that he would not seek re-election.

All early voting for the City of Palestine takes place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays beginning Monday and continuing through Tuesday, May 7 with extended hours of 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday and on May 7.

Voting will be conducted at Palestine City Hall, located at 504 N. Queen St. in Palestine.

Three incumbents have filed for re-election to the Palestine Independent School District board including Dana Staples for Place 3, Rickey Ferguson for Place 4 and Janie Sepulveda for Place 5.

Candidates running against them include JoJo Dickerson in Place 3, Kenneth R. Jordan in Place 4 and Mitchell W. Jordan in Place 5.

Early voting for PISD takes place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays with extended hours of 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on May 6 and 7, at the Palestine ISD Administrative Office, located on 1007 E. Park Ave.

At Elkhart ISD, Position 3 incumbent Steve Ham will face candidate Gary McShan for that spot on the board.

Early voting for Elkhart ISD takes place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the district administration building, located at 301 E. Parker St. in Elkhart.
