PALESTINE — Palestine Police Department officers are continuing to investigate a vehicle versus pedestrian accident Sunday morning that led to the death of a young man.

Just after midnight on Sunday, PPD officers responded to the scene of a traffic accident on Crockett Road at Oakland Street. Upon arrival, officers found that a young man was walking down the street and was hit by a Chevy truck.

The male subject, who has not yet been identified, was said to have been walking north along the street and the Chevy truck was traveling north in the outside lane of travel. The male subject was struck by the truck as the man walked along the roadway.

“Members of the local fire department and EMS arrived on scene to treat the victim, who had received serious injuries from the impact and died at the scene,” PPD Sgt. James Muniz said. “Justice of the Peace Carl Davis pronounced the young man dead and ordered an autopsy be conducted at the medical examiner’s office in Tyler.”

The exact cause of the accident, including why the victim was in the roadway, is still under investigation.

“The driver of the Chevy truck was not injured and has cooperated with police concerning the accident,” Muniz said. “There was another person walking with the victim at the time of the accident, and officers have talked with this possible witness in an attempt to piece together what took place.”

Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper Lynn Hubert is assisting with the investigation.
