An 18-year-old male remained in jail Monday after being arrested for burglarizing a business in west Palestine early Sunday morning.
According to reports, Palestine Police Department officers responded to a report of a possible prowler in the area of the 300 block of West Palestine Avenue at about 4 a.m. Sunday.
Upon arrival, officers found the back door to the Herbalife business had been forced open. They made entry into the building and found the suspect, Roemello Smith hiding inside the building.
Once they had determined that Smith was not associated with the business, officers a detained the suspect.
“Further investigation revealed that the laundromat next to the Herbalife had also been burglarized,” PPD Sgt. James Muniz said. “Officers found that a vent leading into the building had been damaged and entry into the building had been made.”
No one was located include the laundromat, but officers did find that a coin dispensing machine had been damaged when someone tried to pry the machine open.
“The amount of damage to the machine and the buildings is unknown at this time,” Muniz said.
Police were able to put together enough information to charge Smith with two counts of burglary of a building — a state jail felony with a possible punishment range of up to two years in a state jail facility.
Smith was transported to the Anderson County Jail for processing and remains there on bonds totaling $20,000.
