PALESTINE —

Mark Staples was elected the new Anderson County Clerk with 59 percent of the vote during the Republican Primary election Tuesday.

Staples, 33, received 3,423 votes, while his opponent Misty Cross received 2,382 votes. Early voting totals were 1,753 votes for Staples and 1,199 votes for Cross.

“I want to thank the people who supported and helped me in different ways throughout the election — whether it was helping at the meet and greets, putting out signs or making cookies. We have definitely traveled many miles on the roads of Anderson County,” Staples said.

Current County Clerk Wanda Burke is retiring at the end of this term on Dec. 31. Staples will take office on Jan. 1, 2015.

Staples said he is “most definitely” ready for his new role, currently serving as the Anderson County Clerk bookkeeper. Staples said in the near future he plans to take emergency management classes that the county clerk will need as part of the emergency management team.

Staples also will be working on continuing to get the county clerk's office ready for e-filing, which is mandated to begin July 1, 2015.

Cross, 43, serves as the Assistant County Auditor for Anderson County.

“I want to thank everybody who came out and voted and supported me,” Cross said after the race. “I also want to congratulate the winners of all of the races.”
