Brookshire Grocery Co. stores throughout Texas, Louisiana and Arkansas began the 32nd Annual Spirit of Christmas Food Drive Wednesday.

Palestine's Brookshire's along with 149 other Brookshire’s and Super 1 Foods stores will collect donations of non-perishable food items and team up with a wide range of service organizations, food pantries, and other volunteer groups to distribute food to families who need assistance.

BGC will donate boxes of nonperishable food items, as well as a coupon for a free roasting hen to accompany each box of food distributed. The stores also sell scan coupons and apply those donations to purchase additional food for the food drive.

Donations collected in Palestine will remain locally to help needy families.

Customers can support the drive by dropping off individual nonperishable products or purchasing a pre-assembled “grab-bag” of items at their local store. Customers also can purchase $1 or $5 scan coupons at checkout.

The food drive will last until Dec. 18 in most areas.

BGC’s first food drive took place in Tyler in 1982 with the Rose City Kiwanis Club. Nearly 100 families received assistance that year in the Tyler area. Last year, more than 500,000 pounds of food was collected and donated to more than 14,000 families in the Ark-La-Tex.
