Longtime Westwood ISD employee submits resignation

PALESTINE — Longtime Westwood Independent School District employee Shane Jones turned in his resignation Monday following a shuffling of leadership last week at Westwood ISD.

“We wish him the best in his future job positions. He put in 14 years of good, solid service to us,” WISD Superintendent Dr. Ed Lyman told the Herald-Press Monday. “He will always be a part of the Westwood family.”

On Aug. 19, Jones was promoted to the Westwood High School principal position, following the departure of WHS principal and assistant superintendent Dr. Clint McClain, who officially accepted the superintendent position at the 2A Dilley Independent School District on Aug. 16.

However on Friday, Jones was removed from the high school principal position. Lyman said he was unable to comment more on the reason for the move due to legal issues regarding personnel.

Before being promoted, Jones had served as WISD’s director of operations and in years past, served as the head football coach.

On Friday, Lyman named Robert Kubara as the interim Westwood High School principal. Kubura, formerly the Westwood Elementary School principal, was scheduled to serve as assistant principal of curriculum and instruction under Jones.

To help with the restructure, retired WHS principal Judy Thomason has agreed to assist the district in an interim assistant principal position.

“She was principal here for six years and also served as a principal in Oakwood,” Lyman told the Herald-Press Friday. “She’s a Westwood Panther and wants to help out.”

In addition, Lyman said the school district plans to offer an assistant principal position to Joanna Holman, a WISD elementary teacher with central office experience while serving in Conroe. She started Monday as an interim assistant principal.

“When the (school) board meets on Sept. 9, the board will consider offering her an administrative contract,” Lyman said Friday. “All of these changes are temporary until the board gives me guidance on how they want the leadership team at Westwood High School to be organized.”
