An Elkhart man remained in the Anderson County Jail on Thursday after being caught in the act of stealing a dishwasher from a vacant residence.
The incident occurred at about 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, when Texas Department of Public Safety Sgt. Philip Davis spotted a vehicle — a gold 2003 Hyundai — exiting the property, located at the 7,000 block of U.S. 287 South, just north of Elkhart.
“Sgt. Davis knew the residence was unoccupied and pulled the vehicle over near the intersection of U.S. 287 and Anderson County Road 1435,” Sheriff Greg Taylor reported. “Suspecting the driver was stealing property, he contacted Deputy Ginger Lively.”
A dishwasher from the home was found in the back seat of the vehicle, the sheriff said, also reporting that ACSO Sgt. Bobby Bishop had found that the house had been broken into.
The driver, suspect Carlos Javier Rivera-Serrano, 33, of Elkhart was arrested for burglary of a building, a state jail felony, and remained in jail on a $10,000 bond.
“Some other things were found on his person that were probably taken from the house,” Taylor said. “He had probably been at the residence before, and is suspected in other thefts.
“We appreciate Sgt. Davis for being alert and stopping the suspect,” the sheriff added. “Local DPS are always very helpful to us. They do more than just traffic stops. We are very grateful to them.”
