Palestine Community Development Grant applications available May 15

PALESTINE — The Palestine Economic Development Corp (PEDC) will release 2014 Community Development Grant (CDG) applications and hold a meeting to answer questions about the grant process on Thursday, May 15.

The informational meeting will start at 5:30 p.m. at Palestine City Hall, located at 504 N. Queen St.

The CDG is a matching fund program that can be used to purchase or improve land, facilities or equipment located within Palestine or the city’s extraterritorial jurisdiction, which is the unincorporated land within one mile of the city's boundary.

The total grant award is $25,000.

Eligible projects must have an economic, social, cultural or environmental impact on the community. The CDG funds cannot be used for personnel, marketing, promotions or advertising.

Examples of eligible projects include, but are not limited to:

• Parks, athletic facilities, related public space improvements — Venues and facilities available for public use and events, including sports facilities, auditoriums and learning centers.

• Tourism and entertainment facilities — Entertainment, tourist and convention facilities, including museums, concert halls, and exhibition facilities.

• New and expanded businesses — Projects that promote or develop new businesses or facilitate the expansion of existing businesses, including road, streets, water and sewer facilities, transportation facilities, and in some circumstances job training may be funded.

• Affordable housing — Projects suitable for the development or expansion of “affordable housing” as defined by federal law.

Applications will be available on May 15 online at www.cityofpalestinetx.com under Departments / Economic Development; at the Palestine Economic Development Corporation Office, located at 100 Willow Creek Parkway, Suite A; or at Palestine City Hall, located at 504 N. Queen St.

Applications must be submitted to PEDC by 5 p.m. Tuesday, July 1.
