SPRING — Palestine has been awarded membership in Union Pacific Railroad’s Train Town USA Registry as part of the railroad's year-long 150th anniversary celebration.

Palestine received an official Train Town USA resolution signed by Union Pacific Chairman Jim Young during the Palestine Area Chamber of Commerce’s annual banquet Thursday at the Anderson County Youth Livestock Expo Center.

“We are proud to recognize Palestine as we commemorate our railroad's sesquicentennial celebration and growing up together,” said Joe Adams, Union Pacific vice president — Public Affairs Southern Region. “Union Pacific has been part of the country's fabric throughout the railroad's 150-year history.  That bond between us and the nearly 7,300 communities we serve continues to strengthen.”

“Our shared heritage with Palestine is a source of pride as we remember our past while serving and connecting our nation for years to come,” Adams continued.

Train service through Palestine dates back to 1872, when the International Railroad and the Houston and Great Northern Railroad met in Palestine. A year later, the two companies merged and became the International and Great Northern Railroad. The IGN built a major rail depot used to repair steam locomotives and coach rail cars 1892 and a modern passenger coach repair shop in 1902. Both shops remained in operation until the current shop was built in Palestine in 1954.

The IGN became part of the Missouri Pacific Railroad, which merged with Union Pacific in 1997. Today, Union Pacific's facility in Palestine is home to more than 150 employees who work in the car shop and the transportation, signal, track and freight claims departments.
