H-P news staff members win APME honors

PALESTINE — Palestine Herald-Press Sports Editor Justin Rains won a first-place award at the recent Texas Associated Press Managing Editor’s Conference in San Antonio.

Rains won the first-place award in sports feature writing for a story he wrote about Cayuga High School student and basketball player Trayce Howard.

The judges commented that it was a, “nicely handled story on an excellent subject. Best in this category.”

Rains also captured a third-place award for his sports column writing.

PHP News Editor Mary Rainwater and Managing Editor Angie Alvarado won an honorable mention in Star Breaking News Report of the Year for stories they wrote about a man arrested for a school bus incident, in which he tried to drive off with a PISD school bus with about a dozen children on board.

The Texas APME Conference was held in San Antonio April 5-7.
