A local church will be giving away more than 200 bags of groceries and 200 Bibles on a first-come, first-serve basis Monday.
The Antioch Church is holding its “Birds and Bibles” giveaway from 3 to 5:30 p.m. Monday at The Place Children/Youth Community Center, located at 809 E. Murchison St. across street from Antioch Church. Senior citizens and the disabled can call the church office at 903-723-7261 to reserve a bag.
“Through our Birds and Bibles giveaway we are working on two dimensions — birds (hens) for the physical and Bibles for the spiritual,” The Antioch Church pastor, the Rev. Roy G. Duncan said. “We believe that this not only will bless the people receiving, but it also blesses the church. It encourages givers and it encourages service, so it's a win-win for everyone.”
At least 20 volunteers will be helping hand out the food and Bibles, ranging in age from young children to youth and adults.
“We want to be a blessing to our community and we want the them to think outside of the local church,” Duncan said. “We want our church to be a center for the whole community — physically as well as spiritually.
The grocery bags will include not only a roasting hen but vegetables and other items to make meals.
The Antioch Church also is planning an event this Sunday, holding a Christmas play during the 10:30 a.m. worship service called “Still the Lamb.” Gifts for children will be passed out immediately after the service.
