Palestine VFW Post 8924 hosting West benefit Sunday

PALESTINE — The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8924 will hold a benefit for West, Texas on Sunday.

The Central Texas town of West was struck by tragedy after a fertilizer plant explosion on April 17 — killing 10 first responders and destroying numerous homes and businesses, including a school in the rural community with a population of around 2,800.

“Their community is in trouble and now FEMA has turned them down for additional aid,” VFW Post 8924 Commander John Campbell said Wednesday. “We try to do benefits for here in our county but this was a major disaster. The general population of the town of West is in dire straights and we wanted to do something to help.”

The VFW benefit will start at 1 p.m. selling fried fish and fixings for $6 a plate.

An auction will start at 3 p.m. Donation of auction items are currently being sought and will be accepted after the post opens at noon every day through Sunday.

A flag retirement ceremony also will be held during the event.

All proceeds from the benefit will be used to support West.

VFW Post 8924 is located “on the hill” at 160 CR 2101 off South Loop 256 near Palestine Regional Medical Center.

For more information about the benefit or donating auction items, call the VFW Post at 903-723-2251.
