Local motorists who routinely use Crockett Road may want to consider alternate routes next week.
Texas Department of Transportation crews will begin road surface maintenance on Crockett Road, or U.S. 287/Texas 19, from Reagan Street to Loop 256 on Monday.
“It will be quite extensive, with removing the existing surface and then repaving,” TxDOT Public Information Officer Larry Krantz said.
TxDOT maintenance crews are also scheduled to perform seal coat operations on Farm to Market Road 1990 between U.S. Highway 79 south of Palestine and State Highway 294.
Daytime lane closures will be in effect while the work is in progress, and flaggers will control traffic. Loose gravel may be present for several days following a seal coat application.
TxDOT officials are reminding drivers to be especially careful while driving through construction zones. Fines for moving violations in work zones can be as high as $400.
TxDOT’s website reports in 2012, there were 16,687 crashes in roadway construction and maintenance zones in Texas, resulting in 134 fatalities.
“The two leading causes of work zone crashes are excessive speed and the failure to remain alert while driving,” the site states. “As a result, two in five work zone crashes is a rear-end collision.”
