A recently released convicted felon appears to be headed back to prison after shooting a gun at his wife while in an intoxicated state at his Elkhart residence on Wednesday afternoon.
According to Anderson County Sheriff Greg Taylor, suspect Edward Caballero, 43, was involved in a dispute with his wife at their residence at 7:22 p.m. Wednesday in the 200 block of Main Street in Elkhart.
“(The suspect) pulled a 380 pistol and fired into the floor and then near his wife's head,” Taylor reported. “Being intoxicated, he passed out in a chair soon after. His wife left the residence and went to a neighbor's house to report the shooting.”
Anderson County Sheriff's Office Deputy Don Myers and Sgt. Gerald Kerr responded to the scene, where they recovered the pistol, magazines, shell casings and spent rounds.
“Caballero confessed to the incident,” Taylor reported. “He had just been released from prison.”
Caballero is charged with unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon and aggravated assault of a family/household member with a deadly weapon. As of Thursday afternoon, no bond had been set on the charges.
