Students from Carol Bentley’s Academy of Dance will present “Dancing Through Life” during its annual spring recital at 7 p.m. Friday at the Palestine Civic Center.
“The show starts with a spectacular tap production ‘Happiness is Dance’ and includes some surprise dancers! The scenery of the stage, designed and constructed by Claire and Rob Moseley, is a dancing town with buildings, doors and a wall that will be danced on,” Bentley said. “All of the students have worked extremely hard and this Friday night performance will be a presentation of the dancer's willingness to dedicate their best to dance. For those who love dance, there's something that wells up inside — not simply a desire to dance, but a need to dance. Many vocalists, musicians, writers and artists experience something similar.”
This is the studio’s 37th year of putting on recitals.
“Dance has been a love and a way of life for me. However, the most gratifying aspect of this longevity has been the generational relationships that we have been blessed with,” Bentley said. “It is not unusual for us to be teaching the great-grandchildren of former students. The love, care, and compassion we have shared with so many, far outweighs any professional relationship.”
A special presentation during the recital will include the announcement of the Jeanna Carroll Weeks, Alicia Miller and Lindsey Lemon Scholarship Award.
“The Academy of Dance always wants to remember these girls and their love for dance,” Bentley said, noting the awards started in 2001. “These recitals have always given back the memories of these precious girls.”
Last year’s winner was Hannah Cariker, daughter of Heath and Lisa Cariker.
Paulina Sanchez will receive her 10-year dance award and a free dance convention award will be given to a dancer of outstanding performance and dedication.
Teachers for Academy of Dance are Joy Swift, Ashley Gregory, Vanessa Giron and Bentley. The assistant teachers are Hannah Cariker, Elyse Moseley, Sarah Schwingdorf, Sydney Taylor and Kaylea Ronnebaum.
Tickets are $5 and available to purchase at the door. The Palestine Civic Center has a free shuttle for you to ride to and from (both ways) if parking is a problem.
