Elkhart water OK after recent line break

ELKHART — The city of Elkhart officials rescinded its recent boil water notice over the weekend.

City officials said residents no longer have to boil their water prior to consumption as of last Saturday.

“Everything came back fine,” City Secretary Donna Surber said Monday.

The notice was initially implemented after the city experienced breaks in a 6-inch water line last week. After almost three days of repair work, the city was able to resume water service to its customers.

City officials said due to the break, the boil water notice was required by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality as a precaution.

Last week’s water line break was reportedly caused by the severe dry weather the county is currently experiencing. Surber said in an earlier interview city workers were not able to finish repairs in one day so city officials decided to turn the water back on to customers for the night.

“We just had to let it leak all night, but they were right back to it on Thursday,” Surber said last week. “It didn’t help that this line is encased in cement and about eight feet deep.”

Elkhart water customers may contact Elkhart city officials at 903-764-5657 or 903-805-7053 with questions or concerns.
