BUFFALO — A 29-year-old man wanted for a Harris County murder was captured in Buffalo Tuesday after eluding authorities for a couple of weeks.
The Buffalo Police Department arrested Colt Morgan Tuesday afternoon after he was found sleeping inside a maintenance building near the Hampton Inn & Suites, located at 2624 W. Commerce St in Buffalo, according to the Leon County Sheriff's Office.
“It’s a very good day, the people of Buffalo are going to sleep well knowing this guy is off the street,” Leon County Sheriff Kevin Ellis told KBTX Tuesday.
Since Nov. 23, officials have been searching for the suspect in the Buffalo area, asking residents to be vigilant about reporting leads and calling in any suspicious activity or theft.
On Tuesday, a Hampton Inn & Suites maintenance man Adrian Vargas discovered Morgan sleeping in the hotel maintenance building with many items that shouldn't have been in there. Having seen his face around town, Vargas called 911, allegedly startling Morgan, who ran into the woods.
The Buffalo Police Department captured the suspect on a back road near the hotel. Investigators found Morgan's backpack inside the maintenance building, as well as quarters, a rifle and a gun silencer, according to LCSO.
Morgan has been charged with murder in connection with the death of his girlfriend, Wende Marshall, 44, who was last seen on Oct. 30 in the Harris County area, according to a LCSO news release.
That was the day before Marshall called her father to say her boyfriend, Morgan, had just asked to marry her. But when the couple didn’t show up for dinner a couple days later, Marshall's father called law enforcement.
Investigators think Morgan stabbed Marshall to death after an argument, and then burned her body and buried it in her backyard, the LCSO news release said. Detectives also found human remains after conducting a search at Marshall’s house in northwest Harris County, the news release said.
Morgan, who has distant relatives in the Oakwood area of Leon County, was first sighted in the Buffalo area the week of Nov. 11. On Nov. 23, a Buffalo Police Department officer attempted a field interview with Morgan. During questioning by the Buffalo police officer, the suspect attempted to flee and assaulted the officer by head-butting him, the LCSO news release said. The suspect fled on foot, despite being tasered by the officer.
