Memorial Day celebration set Saturday

PALESTINE — The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3907 will hold a Memorial Day celebration on Saturday featuring barbecue, live music, an auction and more.

“We want to invite everyone to come out and support your community and local veterans,” VFW Post Commander Chuck Foltz said Monday during a chamber ribbon-cutting event.

Barbecue brisket plates with potato salad, baked beans, tea and dessert will be sold for $8, beginning at noon and continuing throughout the day until sold out.

Live music will include Double Shot (formerly known as Cherokee), Shiloh and Deep in the Shed. Other bands also may join the lineup. Music will continue until 1 a.m.

An auction will be held during the event and drawings will be held throughout the day for items ranging from tool sets and spa packages.

“This is a family event. We encourage everyone to come out and to bring their kids. We always try to do family-oriented activities,” Foltz said. “We want people to come in and learn more about us. We especially encourage returning soldiers to visit us and consider joining our post.”

At 7 a.m. Monday, the VFW members and Ladies Auxiliary will meet at the post for donuts and coffee before heading out to put flags on the graves of local veterans. Last year, the VFW post put out more than 1,000 flags.

“Every Memorial Day we put out flags to honor the fallen,” Foltz said.

The VFW post offers a full schedule of activities each week including bingo at 3 p.m. on Sundays; karaoke on Wednesdays and Fridays from 8 p.m. to midnight; and a live band or deejay music on Saturdays from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m.

The VFW Post 3907 was founded March 29, 1944 with 33 members in attendance. The Ladies Auxiliary was formed a few months later on July 13, 1944 with 29 members in attendance.

The property was purchased from F.F. Dietz on Sept. 26, 1957 for $10. The groundbreaking for the current building was held in 1974 with the building being finished and paid for in 1978. On March 28, 1974, Houston County Post 5870 in Grapeland and Post 3907 consolidated into one post.

Currently, there are 237 VFW members and 167 Ladies Auxiliary members.

“The Ladies Auxiliary plays a very active role at our post,” Foltz said.

VFW Post 3907 conducts several activities in support of veterans, their families and the community, supporting a variety of local groups such as the Crisis Center, Palestine Health Care Center, Anderson County Sheltered Workshop, Toys for Tots, Wounded Warrior and other organizations. They also sell buddy poppies.

“We support the Fisher House for when the guys come back from overseas and need medical treatment. It’s a place similar to McDonald’s House. We gather items they need like linens and towels,” Ladies Auxiliary junior vice Kerry Holbrook said. “We also do cancer aid and research fund-raisers and give out scholarships.”

Each year, the local post presents a $1,000 scholarship to a high school student who wins the Voice of Democracy essay contest and $500 to the junior high school student who wins the Patriotic Pen essay contest.
