Health care telephone scam targeting seniors

PALESTINE — Criminals are taking full advantage of the upcoming ObamaCare heath care program — targeting senior citizens using a telephone phone scam in order to gain personal information.

“We received a report from a citizen where the caller told them that in light of upcoming changes in the health care system, their Medicare information needed to be updated,” Anderson County Sheriff Greg Taylor said. “They were asking for names, addresses, Social Security numbers and other personal information.

“Fortunately, the citizen hung up the phone,” he said.

Taylor warns all local residents to be very wary of any phone call where the caller is seeking personal information.

“There a seniors out there that are scared about ObamaCare and are liable to give out information they shouldn’t,” he said. “The government does not solicit that kind of information.”

Those who have received any similar calls or have been a victim of such a scam should report it as soon as possible to the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office at 903-729-6068 or the Palestine Police Department at 903-731-8484.
