PALESTINE — The makers of a popular Dollar Tree brand of salsa issued a voluntary recall of salsa last week, because some shipments may contain large pieces of glass.

Olam Tomato Processors, Inc., is recalling jars of both mild and medium varieties of its Chunky Salsa.

The recalled Mild Chunky Salsa (UPC 3927759137) includes the production codes L12142 (Best By Date June 2015) and L04093 (Best By Date October 2015). The recalled Medium Chunky Salsa (UPC 3927759139) is L01313 (Best By Date July 2015).

The labels of the affected product will say distributed by Greenbrier International, Inc. All shipments of the recalled salsa were sold at Dollar Tree and Deals stores, Dollar Express and Dollar Bill$.

“We’ve pulled all our product off the shelves already,” Palestine Dollar Tree Manager Lance Whitehead said Tuesday. “And we’ve not had any complaints or problems to my knowledge.”

This voluntary action is being taken after three consumers reported finding glass in salsa they’d recently purchased. No injuries have been reported.

According to the Associated Press, a company spokeswoman said the pieces of glass that got into the jars during the manufacturing process when some jars were damaged were too large to be detected by the plant's X-rays.

This recall is being undertaken in cooperation with the Food and Drug Administration and the California Department of Public Health. Due to the popularity of the product and proactive measures that have been taken, it is believed that no product remains in retail distribution.

“We do sell quite a bit of it,” Whitehead said. “Anyone who finds any recalled product are welcome to bring it back to the store.”

The voluntary recall is limited to these three lots of production, which were distributed nationwide. No other production dates, sizes or varieties of Chunky Salsa products are affected by this recall.

Olam Tomato Processors is dedicated to product quality, and the health and safety of its consumers. For these reasons, Olam Tomato Processors has voluntarily initiated the recall.

“We apologize to consumers and sincerely regret any inconvenience created by this voluntary product recall,” the company stated in its official recall statement. “Consumers who may have purchased the recalled Chunky Salsa should not consume the product, but instead should return it to the store for a full refund.”
