Free parenting class starting June 20

PALESTINE — Parents Anonymous of Tyler will present a 10-week free parenting class program in Palestine starting June 20.

“We’ve had a lot of requests to do classes here and we want to continue offering classes,” Parents Anonymous of Tyler Program Director Mary Thrasher told the Herald-Press Tuesday. “We want to strengthen families so they know how to communicate, discuss the ages and stages of a child’s life and know what to expect.”

The 10-week program called Middle Way will start with the first class from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 20 at the Counseling Center, 1118 N. Link St. in Palestine. Lynn Badger will lead the program using the Middle Way curriculum.

“Everyone is encouraged to sign up — moms, dads and grandparents,” Thrasher said. “Our mission is to try to keep families strong so they don’t end up in the system.”

Each week has a different focus:

• Week One — Exploring Parenting Challenges

• Week Two — Nurturing Personal Strengths

• Week Three — Discipline vs. Punishment

• Week Four — Communication

• Week Five — Feelings and Stages

• Week Six — Choices and Consequences

• Week Seven — Behavior Management Toolbox

• Week Eight — Praise and Encouragement

• Week Nine — Values and Sexuality

• Week 10 — Review

“It’s more than just an educational class. It’s a support group to talk to other parents who can comprehend what other parents are going through and getting mutual support from each other that will help strengthen them,” Thrasher said.

At least 10 people are needed to sign up for the classes to start.

The cost of the program is free. Call to register for the classes at 903-597-1831.
