A fire destroyed a wood-frame house on Burkett Street Monday morning.
“It started in the bedroom area. We are investigating it but no foul play is suspected. It appears to be accidental,” Palestine Fire Chief Alan Wilcher said Monday afternoon.
The fire was reported around 11 a.m. at 604 Burkett St. after the resident's neighbors saw the smoke, Wilcher said. The lone occupant in the home, Kathy Johnson, was sitting on the porch at the time, unaware that there was a fire until her neighbors told her.
“By the time we got there it was heavy smoke and heavy fire in the middle room in the middle of the house. It was going pretty good when we got there,” Wilcher said. “There was quite a bit of damage in the attic and what I would deem as a total loss.”
The home was insured, Wilcher said.
The American Red Cross was contacted to assist the woman with temporary housing and clothing.
