Boston's Buckin' BBQ Cook-off to benefit scholarship fund

PALESTINE — Hungry for a chance to prove your barbeque is the most finger-lickin'-good of them all?

Then head out to the Anderson County Rodeo Grounds located on U.S. Highway 287 North for Boston's Buckin' Barbeque Cook-Off this Friday, benefitting the Boston Porter Memorial Scholarship Fund.

Kim Ray, organizer of the event, said anyone is welcome to show up and compete. The event will take place under the Anderson County Youth Livestock Pavilion, so weather should not be an issue.

“People can just come on Friday and pay to register and participate,” she said.

Check-in and set-up is Friday, and judging will take place Saturday, adhering to the following schedule:

• 9 a.m. — Head Cooks Meeting

• 11 a.m. — Jackpot Beans

• 12 p.m. — Half of whole chicken

• 1 p.m. — Pork Spare Ribs

• 2 p.m. — Brisket

Awards will follow.

The cost to register is $100, which buys entry to any or all of the meat categories. The jackpot beans category will cost an additional $15. Water and electric will not be provided.

Ray said 90 percent of paid entry fees will go back to the winners, with a portion benefitting the Boston Porter Memorial Scholarship Fund. The fund was created in the memory of Boston Porter, who lost his life in a tragic accident at the age of 14 months.

Ray, the grandmother of Porter, said the fund will allocate more than $25,000 in scholarships to students later this month.

She said donations to the fund also will be taken during the event.

“We would like for everybody to come out and support the scholarship,” she said.

The event is sanctioned by the Lone Star Barbeque Society. Official rules and the entry form can be found on the website at

There also will be a 50/50 cash giveaway the day of the cook-off. Raffle tickets are $1.
