A 49-year-old Palestine woman was killed around mid-day Monday from injuries sustained in a two-vehicle wreck on U.S. 79, just west of the Palestine city limits.
Cheryl Diane Welch, 49, of Palestine was pronounced dead at the scene of the wreck which occurred around 12:20 p.m. Monday on U.S. 79, approximately 1 mile west of the Palestine city limits, according to Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper Lynn Hubert.
No other persons were injured as a result of wreck, according to the trooper.
Welch was traveling westbound in a 2011 Jeep Compass SUV when she crossed over the center stripe and collided with an eastbound truck-tractor operated by 33-year-old Clifford Lawrence Jarrett of Brownsville, Tenn., according to the DPS.
“She (Welch) hit the driver’s side left front tire and went down the side of it before her vehicle turned over on its top,” Hubert said.
Welch, who was wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene by Anderson County Justice of the Peace Carl Davis, according to the trooper.
A witness told authorities that Welch had been alternating between the westbound shoulder and regular lane of traffic for some time before veering all the way into the eastbound lane of traffic, according to Hubert.
As of late Monday afternoon, Hubert said authorities were still uncertain as to what might have caused Welch to travel into the opposite lane of traffic.
An autopsy has been ordered and will be performed at Southeast Texas Forensic Science Center in Tyler.
