PALESTINE —

The Anderson County Sheriff's Office arrested two Palestine men Thursday for burglary of a building after getting caught attempting to steal scrap metal from a property.

Steven Arthur Hoskin, 48, and Glenn Allen Brantley, 50, are currently in the Anderson County Jail on a $25,000 bond each.

The Anderson County Sheriff's Office received a call about 3 p.m. Thursday about a burglary in progress in the 7000 block of U.S. 84 East.

“Deputy Wes Dean responded to the scene was able to catch two individuals on the property. They had been taking various items of metal and scrap out of the building on that property. They had broken into the building to access it, making it a state felony charge,” ACSO Sheriff Greg Taylor told the Herald-Press Friday.

Stealing scrap metal is a huge problem, Taylor said.

“We have a large problem here with scrappers, as they call themselves. It's one thing if they own the scrap, but they are trying to scrap someone else's scrap,” Taylor said. “That's what they do — they find abandoned places and steal the scrap metal.”

Taylor shared his appreciation of the person who reported the crime in progress.

“We appreciate the call we got from the curious onlooker who saw something not right and called us,” Taylor said. “Because of their call, the officer was able to capture the suspects on the scene. We appreciate anyone who calls in suspicious activity. You never know what it will lead to, but in this case, the officers were able to catch them.”
