The Piney Woods Fine Arts Association is planning its annual Piney Woods PolkaFest on Oct. 5 with a polka band, German food and drink.
Legendary polka band Brave Combo will perform during the event, which is funded in part by a grant from the Texas Commission on the Arts and sponsored by Renaissance Surgery Center and Cutshaw Chevrolet.
“Brave Combo is a band that rocks the brain and the feet. Ask anyone that was there last year — this is fun,” PWFAA Executive Director J. Bryan Lake said. “They are back due to the overwhelming response from last year’s festival. This family-friendly event is a good time for all!”
Brave Combo has been nominated for a Grammy award seven times and has won twice.
Trying to describe Brave Combo’s music requires a pretty extensive vocabulary – at least when it comes to musical styles. For the past three decades the Denton-based quintet has perfected a world music mix that includes salsa, meringue, rock, cumbia, conjunto, polka, zydeco, classical, cha cha, the blues and more.
“They are America’s premier dance band and a rollicking, rocking, rhythmic global journey — offering what one critic recently wrote, ‘even if you come for the party, you'll leave with something of a musical education,’” a PWFAA news release said.
The event will be held at the Houston County Airport on Texas 7, just east of Crockett. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. No outside food or drinks is allowed.
Tickets are $22 in advance and available online at www.pwfaa.org or by calling 936-544-4276. Tickets will be $27 at the door. Kids under age 18 get in free.
For more information, call the PWFAA office Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 936-544-4276 or visit PWFAA on Facebook.
