Congo Truck Club Show slated July 13

PALESTINE — Classic trucks and cars, sports cars and street rods of all kinds will be featured in the Congo Truck Club’s 11th annual Truck and Car Show set for Saturday, July 13 in Palestine.

Sponsored by Ben E. Keith Distributing, the show will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Ben E. Keith parking lot (2019 W. Oak St.).

“We encourage the public to come out and see the vehicles and help us judge them for the show,” Congo Truck Club Vice President Garland Wilson Jr. said. “Last year we had about 55 to 60 entries from Shreveport, Tyler, Marshall, Longview, Fort Worth and the Dallas area, Waco and Corsicana.”

Prizes will include Best of Show, Best Engine, Best Paint and Best Interior, as well as trophies for first, second and third place.

“We let the public judge the different classes,” Wilson said.

Truck classes include: 1900 to 1959, 1960 to 1972, 1988 to present and mini trucks. There also are categories for low rider cars and trucks, pro street cars and trucks; SUVs, imports and “under construction.”

Car classes include: Street rods, classic cars, sports cars and antique cars.

Entry starts at 10 a.m. with the cut-off at 3 p.m. Entry fee is $25 per vehicle. Proceeds from the show will go to the club’s scholarship fund.

Trophies will be awarded at 4 p.m.

Food and beverages will be available for show participants and the public. Fried chicken plates will be sold for $7, featuring baked beans, potato salad and a drink.

The Congo Truck Club was organized in 1995 as a non-profit organization by Lawrence Reed and Wilson. Since its inception, the club has striven to nourish the spirit of the community by supporting and donating to several charities. The club also participates in local parades and events.

The club has donated to the following: Church functions and events, scholarships, Thanksgiving and Christmas food baskets, toys for children during Christmas, clothes and school supplies for less fortunate children and helping families with hardship burdens.

The club meets at 3 p.m. on the first Sunday of each month at different locations.
