Our Town: Actor with local ties plays lead in Tyler theater's 'Footloose'

PALESTINE — The Tyler Civic Theatre is currently producing the musical “Footloose” based on the popular ‘80s movie — and Nick Galley, who has Palestine connections, is playing the male lead.

Galley, who graduated from Bullard High School and will be 20 years old in October, is cast as Ren McCormick, who brings dance back to the heart of a town held back by the memory of a tragedy, in a role that launched the career of Kevin Bacon.

Galley is the son of Jodi Harding of Palestine and Mike Gilley in Tyler. Grandparents are John Walling and Diane Scarbrough. Great-grandparents are Dr. and Mrs. Jack Thompson of Palestine.

“He’s been in a play it seems ever since he started school, many times he was the stage manager,” great-grandmother Carolyn Thompson said. “He wants to continue to do this after he graduates from college.”

Thompson said Galley plans to attend The University of North Texas in Denton.

The “Footloose” musical will continue with performances at 7:30 p.m. today and Saturday and at 2:30 p.m. Sunday and the following weekend, 7:30 p.m. July 26-27 and 2:30 p.m. July 28 at the Braithwaite Theater, located at 400 Rose Park Dr. in Tyler.

“Footloose” is a 1998 musical based on the 1984 film of the same name. The music is by Tom Snow (among others), the lyrics by Dean Pitchford (with additional lyrics by Kenny Loggins), and the book by Pitchford and Walter Bobbie.

“Footloose” explodes onto the stage with classic ‘80s anthems including “Holding Out For A Hero,” “Almost Paradise,” “Let’s Hear It For The Boy” and of course the title track, “Footloose.”

Life in small-town Bomont is peaceful until city boy, Ren, arrives. Based on the hit ‘80s movie (which helped launched the careers of Bacon, Sarah Jessica Parker and John Lithgow), “Footloose” has become a stage musical phenomenon.

Tickets for the show are $20. For more information or tickets, visit or call 903-592-0561.
