Hoppin' success: sweetFrog brings new kind of sweet treat to Palestine

PALESTINE — Nearly two weeks since its grand opening, Palestine’s newest business — sweetFrog premium frozen yogurt shop — is already hoppin’.

The international chain currently boasts about 260 stores — 18 in Texas alone — across the nation and two in other countries and makes a point to put God front and center.

“The ‘frog’ part of sweetFrog means Fully Relying On God,” Palestine store Manager Arthur Jasper explained. “We picked Palestine as one of our newest locations because we have the best success in smaller towns, where a sense of community spirit is still strong.”

The company’s website states, “We’ve grown a lot since we began in 2009, but we’ll never get too big to lose our commitment to local communities. Our stores are always looking to hold fundraisers to assist people in reaching their dreams. And through our pin-up campaigns, we bring national issues down to a local level for everyone to take part in. We’re convinced that sowing back into our neighborhoods is fruitful for everyone.”

Palestine’s branch, located at 1625 Loop 256 Suite F (in the Palestine Plaza), officially started serving frozen yogurt on Aug. 12.

“It’s been going very well,” cashier Alma Thompson said. “I think people are excited to try something new and different.”

Jasper said the self-serve yogurt bar is simple — and affordable, at 45 cents an ounce.

“You choose your size and what flavor of yogurt you want; then pull the lever and dish out how much or how little you’d like; top it with any combination of the variety of toppings we offer and viola you have your very own, custom frozen treat,” he said.

Yogurt flavors, which are rotated weekly, include huckleberry, cookies ‘n cream, Irish mint, New York cheesecake, pecan praline, root beer float, apple pie, four kinds of vanilla and of course chocolate. There are also nonfat, lowfat and no sugar added varieties to choose from and even sorbet.

“We’ve even got a maple bacon donut flavor I’m interested in offering here,” Jasper said.

Toppings include all kinds of fresh fruits; assorted nuts; 10 different flavors of sauces; candies of all types, from gummy worms and Skittles to pieces of dark chocolate, M&M’s, Butterfinger and Reese’s peanut butter cups; bite-sized treats like cheesecake, Oreo and chocolate chip cookies and brownies — even the obligatory rainbow-colored sprinkles.

Specialties offered include three types of waffle cones, banana boats and parfaits.

Palestine’s store and the chain’s website also offer sweetFrog merchandise like Scoop and Cookie toys and apparel.
