Zombies are invading Palestine! And what better reason to run for your life than when zombies are chasing you?
Crazed zombies covered in fake blood will be chasing people through an obstacle course during a special Zombie Fun Run starting at 4 p.m. Saturday at Wildcat Stadium as a fund-raiser for the Palestine High School Wildcat Band's Disney trip.
“Zombies are all the rage right now with the popularity of the 'Walking Dead' show, which has made zombie fun runs very popular,” PHS Band Booster member Kathy Coleman told the Herald-Press. “We think it will be pretty fun to have zombies chasing everyone.”
Each contestant — age 6 and up — will start in the obstacle course wearing a belt with three flags, which is considered to represent three lives.
“The zombies will be concealed in different places in the obstacle course and they will try to capture the flags off the runners. If you have all three flags taken, you become a zombie,” Coleman explained. “The runner who finishes first with at least one of their lives left is declared the winner.”
Runners will be divided into age groups and the winner of each wave will win a prize.
So, who exactly are the zombies? The zombies are PHS Wildcat Band members.
“The band is excited about doing this, they think it will be a lot of fun,” Coleman said.
Proceeds will go toward the band's trip to Disney World in Orlando, Fla. The band plans to make the trip in May 2014. The trip will include about 70 students, 10 parent chaperones and three band directors who will travel on two coach buses.
The students will have the opportunity to rehearse with professional musicians and record in the Epcot Disney Performing Arts OnStage Performance studio to make a soundtrack for a cartoon.
The Disney trip will cost $400 per person, plus $300 per person for the bus fee. Students and chaperones will pay the same $600 in six installments. The Band Boosters are fundraising to cover the remaining bus costs
Registration forms for the Zombie Fun Run are available at all Palestine school campuses. Entry fee is $7 for each runner. Registration also will be held before the event.
“Other zombie fun runs have charged in the range of $25 to $45 to participate, but being that this is our first year, we felt like $7 was reasonable,” Coleman said.
Spectators wanting to watch the Zombie Fun Run will pay a $2 entry fee.
