The adventures of Turt & Squirt: Library program encourages kids to explore their community

PALESTINE — New visitors are in town — touring all of Palestine’s hottest and coolest tourist spots. Their names are Turt & Squirt — Turt the Sea Turtle and Squirt the Orca.

The Palestine Public Library are the ones bringing the large inflatable characters to life for the children in the area this summer — even offering a fun “Turt & Squirt Summer Adventure” art contest with the contest winners winning full size inflatable Turt & Squirt pool toys.

“Turt and Squirt just arrived in Palestine and have a lot of fun places they want to go,” PPL Librarian Rachel Menjivar said. “They are kind of like Flat Stanleys except these are inflatables.”

The adventure started the moment Turt & Squirt hit the tarmac at the Palestine Municipal Airport, greeted by airport employee Toni Graser, who told the duo about all of the fascinating planes housed at the airport including a King Air and a Cessna. While at the airport, Turt & Squirt were able to watch a medical helicopter land, refuel and take off again!

“We are putting their photo journal online of all of the local attractions they get to see. We want to encourage kids to follow their lead and get out of the house and have some fun this summer,” Menjivar said. “Turt and Squirt went to the Visitors Center on Friday and hope to be going to several more places, including Reagan Park and the Splashpark.”

You can follow the adventures of Turt & Squirt online at www.cityofpalestinetx.com by clicking on Turt & Squirt link.

The Turt & Squirt art contest encourages children to make up their own adventure as if the inflatable duo went on a trip with them somewhere in Palestine — with local references.

The library is currently home to the Summer Reading Club, where activities and fun are taking place several days a week.

The library also is planning a Back to School Bash on Saturday, Aug. 10 with lots of fun activities.

To create your own adventure for Turt and Squirt and be entered for a chance to win your own Turt & Squirt, stop by the Palestine Public Library and pick up the entry form. The completed entries are due back in the library no later than 6 p.m. Aug. 2. The winners will be announced at the Back to School Splash Bash with Turt & Squirt. There will be two winners — one in the pre-K to second-grade range and one in the 3-6 grade range.

Entry forms also are available not only at the library but at Palestine City Hall and the Palestine Visitors Center.

The library is located in the Palestine Mall at 2000 S. Loop 256, Suite 42. For more information, call the library at 903-729-4121.
