FUMC Palestine hosts annual bazaar; adds 'Country Store'

PALESTINE —

First United Methodist Church of Palestine is currently planning for its Beef, Bakes & Bids Bazaar fund-raiser on Thursday, May 17, and asking its members to consider donating items for the silent auction and live auction and donating handmade items to its newest addition, The Country Store.

“For the first time, the Country Store will be presented in conjunction with the Beef, Bakes & Bids Bazaar. The Country Store was born out of a need to utilize the church members' untapped talents and to allow members to be more involved in church activities,” spokeswoman Carla LeGard explained. “These talents include canning, cooking, sewing or anything else a church member can make. Small handbags, scarves and unusual potholders are among the items we have, for example.”

The Beef, Bakes & Bids Bazaar will be held in the FUMC fellowship hall with a barbecue lunch served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tickets are $8. Dine-in and take-out meals will be available.

At 1 p.m., the live auction will start. High-quality, valuable items are needed for the live auction. Homemade cakes and pies do well, organizers said.

The silent auction and The Country Store also will be available for those in attendance.

“For our live auction, we have everything from handmade quilts to hunting trips and handmade yard art and cakes to auction off,” silent auction chair Mary Upton said. “For the silent auction, we have many different items donated by merchants in Palestine. We also have two Miyoko Callaway paintings donated by a member of our church.”

Proceeds from the event will go towards repairs to church parking lots, sidewalks and lighting.

A meeting will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, May 10 in a classroom at FUMC's fellowship hall. Any church member that wants to help the Country Store is encouraged to be at the meeting. Church members can bring items to the meeting or up until 10 a.m. May 17 on the day of the fund-raiser.
