The annual Christmas Parade of Lights set for Saturday, Dec. 1 will kick off a flurry of holiday events around Palestine.
“The City of Palestine is teaming up with the county to make the holidays bigger and better in Palestine. You will see more decorations, more participation and more activities than in the past,” City of Palestine Event Coordinator Heather Hrebec said. “Deejay Casey Brown with CMB Music will be on hand playing Christmas music to get you in the mood. Santa will be at the courthouse after the parade and all children can visit with him for free — so don’t forget you cameras. We will have activities for the children to participate in, and we will count down the lighting of the courthouse square. What a great way to kick off the holiday season.”
The parade will start at 7 p.m. at the Anderson County Courthouse square with the theme “Christmas in Toyland.”
The route will be a little different than in the past — after leaving the courthouse square, the parade procession will proceed to Avenue A, to Main Street, turning right on Queen Street, back to Lacy Street and returning to the courthouse square — where Santa Claus will greet children and activities will be held.
Check-in, required for all participants, will be at the corner of Church and Crawford streets beginning at 6 p.m.
Awards for best parade entries will be given in the following categories: Band, Equine/Carriage, Automobile and Float. First-place float entry will receive a $300 cash prize. Entries will be judged on theme, presentation of lights and overall appearance. Judges will be stationed at the Chamber of Commerce Building at the corner of Main and Queen streets.
To qualify for awards, participants must be registered no later than 5 p.m. Monday, Nov. 26. Entry forms can be picked up and returned to the Palestine Visitor Center, 825 W. Spring St., Palestine City Hall, 504 N. Queen St. and the Palestine Civic Center, 1819 W. Spring St. or faxed to 903-723-1597.
Awards will be presented at the city stage located on the courthouse grounds following the parade. Floats will be directed to a designated parking area.
