Palestine Herald-Press

This weekend, Steps of Faith Dance Center will present “Claire & The Land of the Sweets” in four performances of an original adaption of the Christmas classic “The Nutcracker” with a modern day twist.

The performances will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday, 2 p.m. Saturday, 7:30 p.m. Saturday and at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Palestine Civic Center. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students (4 years old to 12th grade). Tickets are free for children age 3 and under. Tickets can be purchased at the door or in advance at Cream & Coffee or Great American T-shirt Company.

“The Land of Sweets was always my favorite part of the ballet. We are using the traditional music of Tchaikovsky but with a few twists like gingerbread that hip hops instead of Marzipan on pointe,” Steps of Faith Dancer Center Director Jennifer Ballew said. “We hope this becomes a holiday tradition for families in Palestine like Polar Express™ and Frost Fest have become.

Each year to keep it fresh and exciting, we will add fun twists and new choreography and still remain true to the classic traditional story of 'The Nutcracker,” Ballew continued.

Two sets of dancers will perform in the principal roles, with one set performing in the roles on Friday night and Saturday afternoon and the second set performing Saturday night and Sunday afternoon.

Performing in principle roles with the first set on Friday night and Saturday afternoon include: Claire, Juliana Cueva; Nutcracker Prince, Kayle Bosley; Snow Queen, Kallie Bosley; Snow Princesses, Haley Shaver, Chelsie Hernandez and Emily Hodges; Chocolate: Juli Ballew: Coffee: Cali Sloan; Tea: Kaylynn Manley, Jaycie Manley and Madison Edgerton; Gingerbread Kids, Baylee Barrett and Karen Moore; Elves: Janna Ballew, Jaci Hood, Jacob Houck, Ella Lightfoot, Abigail Lipscomb and Addison Simpson: Dewdrop fairies: Autumn Baublet and Haley Ward; and Sugar plum fairy, Anna Yeakey.

In the second set on Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon, those performing in the principal roles include: Claire, Emma Bennett; Nutcracker Prince, Jacoob Houck; Snow Queen, Ashley Hall; Snow Princesses, Jocelyn Musil, Jaycie Manley and Eva Jeffus; Chocolate, Dominique Twine; Coffee, Claire Drinkers; Tea, Janna Ballew, Jessica Boger and Ava Trim; Gingerbread Kids, Joli Ballew and Kayle Bosley; elves, Kaylynn Manley, Madison Edgerton, Anahi Hernandez,  Abigail Spaith, Harley Paul and Aubrey McClendon; dewdrop fairies: Esther and Ella Jeffus; Sugar plum fairy, Avery Davidson.

“Some of the kids have been working on the dances for the show since this summer when we held auditions for principle role. They have put in a lot of extra practices and their excitement about getting to be such key characters in this classic story is palatable,” Ballew said. “We’ve even laughed and said how fun it’ll be when they can bring their own children to the show one day and say. 'I was in the very first one!' It’s such an honor to give kids traditions like this that they can look back on years from now and remember being part of!”

Choreographers for “Claire & The Land of Sweets" are Jennifer Ballew, Kelly Musil, Victoria Gallina and Carrie McComas.
