OUR TOWN: Area students win scholarships from The Terry Foundation

PALESTINE — Two Anderson County high school seniors, Heather Lindy Wooden of Westwood High School and Nathaniel Aaron Edwards of Slocum High School, were recently named recipients of the highly sought after scholarships from The Terry Foundation.

Over 11,000 students applied for the 50 scholarships allocated for Texas A&M University, which will pay for up to four years of college education. Those applying for the scholarship undergo an extensive process including multiple interviews and must complete a large amount of paperwork.

Wooden is the daughter of Wesley Wooden and the granddaughter of Gary and Rita Coates and George Wooden. Edwards is the son of Shawn and Cathy Edwards and the grandson of Fred and RutheAnn Richardson.

Both seniors are salutatorians for their respective graduating classes. The two are also a couple, having recently attended prom together.

Weekly artist gathering slated

The Palestine Senior Activity Center has recently made one of its rooms, complete with tables and chairs, available for use as a space for artists who wish to gather with fellow artists to draw, paint and more.

A weekly gathering has been scheduled for noon to 4 p.m. on Thursdays at the center, which is located at 200 N. Church St. in Palestine. It offers artists a chance to meet other artists, find out about local art shows and events and to become inspired and awaken one’s talents.

Those attending will need to bring their own supplies.

Cost is 75 cents per person, per week to help cover electricity costs. There will be no instructor for the class. For more information, call Shirley Hiser at 903-723-1137 or 903-388-6075.
