Ladycat offense explodes in win

When Palestine girls’ soccer coach Stephen Cooksey decided to change his formation this season, he knew there would be an emphasis on playing defense.

But it was the offense that exploded for the Ladycats Tuesday night, as Palestine shut out Diboll, 9-0, in the district opener.

“This was the first time that we clicked on all cylinders,” Cooksey said. “Every game, there had been a few mishaps, but last night showed that we’re starting to get into rhythm.”

The Ladycats’ next target is a win in the Kennedale Tournament this week.

Palestine plays LaVega at 12:45 p.m. today.

“It’s always wonderful to open district with a win, and we’re trying to maintain that high,” Cooksey said.

The Ladycats were scheduled to have a bye on Friday, but Cooksey added the tournament to help give his team an advantage.

“We’re guaranteed at least three games, and to me, that’s extra practice and extra game time,” the Palestine coach said. “I think it gives us a little more experience than some of the other teams in district.”

The Kennedale Tournament is a Class 3A Invitational, and the Ladycats will be competing against seven other teams from all over Texas.

“These are teams we’ve never played before so I really don’t know what to expect,” Cooksey said. “We’re going in wanting to win it, but if we don’t, hopefully we’ll get something out of it.”
