Fairfield’s Bass wins state in long jump

Cayuga’s Hope takes second in high jump

AUSTIN — Fairfield’s Gavan Bass and Cayuga’s Jamie Hope will be heading back with medals after the first day of the University Interscholastic League’s State Track and Field Championships Friday at Mike A. Meyers Stadium on the University of Texas campus.

Bass won gold in the Class 3A high jump and took third place in the Class 3A 100.

Hope, in her third year at the state meet, took second place in the Class A high jump.

Hope finished with a leap of 5-foot-5 inches, which tied her with Rochelle’s Bonnie Richardson.

However, Richardson accomplished the jump with fewer misses, giving her the gold and Hope the silver.

Bass won the long jump with a leap of 22-10 3/4.

Bass had his best leap on the fourth of six jumps, which was more than three inches better than Cuero’s Brent Johnson’s second-place jump of 22-7 1/4.

Later in the day, Bass took bronze in the 100, finishing third with a time of 10.81 seconds. Kenneth Turner of Snyder won the dash with a time of 10.61 and Brock Taylor, whom Bass defeated in the regional race, was second with a 10.73.

Davis, Celsey Rodgers and Rachel Teetz.

Elkhart’s Rebecca Jensen will be competing in the Class 2A 1600, Slocum has two athletes running, Logan Foster in the Class A 1600 and Otis Lackey in the Class A 800. Grapeland freshman Javontae McCoy will be running in the Class A 100.
