Indians learning quickly under Wells

The Palestine Herald

FRANKSTON — After becoming the Frankston head coach late in July, Sam Wells has not had much time to bring in his new offense and defense.

And the head coach may not need that much time as his players have been quick studies the first three days of practice.

“The kids are soaking up everything we are feeding them,” Wells said. “They are picking it up really fast and practice has been excellent this week.”

While the Frankston players have been fast learners, Wells knows it will take a little extra time compared to other teams because Wells did not have spring practice with Frankston.

“We are progressing a little slower but that is OK,” the Frankston head coach said. “We are going to learn what we nee to do and make sure we do it well.

“We are taking it one step at a time.”

Frankston has 77 players come out to practice which Wells said should allow the Indians to field a freshman team this year.

“Those are excellent numbers to a 2A school,” Wells said.

Through the first three days of practice, Frankston has had good weather, including Wednesday, which the Indians did get some rain during the early session of practice.

“Because of the nice weather, we have been able to push them a little more and go a little harder,” Wells said. “It has been great weather so far.”

Frankston will conclude its first four days of practice out of pads today.

“We are just trying to get our conditioning in before we put on pads,” Wells said. “We also have been busy learning the offensive and defensive schemes.”

Wells, along with the players, are highly anticipating Friday which is the first day teams are allowed to wear pads.

“We can’t wait to get after it and find out which guys on Friday want to come out and hit,” Wells said. “We are going to learn a lot about this football team on Friday.”
