Roberts excited to be on other side of whistle

For Westwood head volleyball coach Stacey Roberts, the first week of practice was her first time to be on the other side of the whistle.

For the last five years, Roberts spent time refereeing volleyball teams.

Now she is coaching one.

“It is nice to be on this side of the whistle and I am pumped up and ready to go,” Roberts said. “It has been a little tough getting to know the program here, but it was opportunity that I could not pass up.”

So far, around 35 girls showed up to the first week of practice, with a majority of them returning from last year.

“I did not really know what to expect, but there are a lot of girls who were not going to play and then decided to return,” Roberts said.

In practice, the Lady Panthers are going back to the basics, working on fundamentals and focusing on passing drills.

“Passing, passing, passing,” Roberts said. “If you cannot pass, you cannot get the ball to the setter.

“It all starts with passing.”

Roberts said she sees a lot of potential in her team, especially on the offensive end.

“We have a lot of hitters and a lot of girls that can jump and hit the ball,” the Westwood coach said. “This team definitely has a lot of potential.”
