Westwood looks for first win
Herald-Press Game of the Week

Two weeks into the season and the Westwood Panthers are still looking for their first win.
After a tough loss to Chapel Hill last week, the Panthers will look to regroup against a Bullard team that Westwood dominated against last season.
Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m.
This will be the ninth straight meeting between the two teams, with the Panthers winning the last three years.
“We’re going on the road again and this is Bullard’s first game in a new stadium,” Westwood head coach Kevin Anderson said. “They’re going to try and play it up pretty good but we’re hoping to spoil their opening.”
Offensively, Bullard runs an offensive formation similar to the one run by Chapel Hill, but tends to pass the ball more with Charlie Moore at quarterback.
“They’re a little more balanced than Chapel Hill and they throw the ball maybe 40-percent of the time,” Anderson said.
Moore returns after throwing for 1,252 yards last season as well as rushing 117 times for 746 yards and 15 touchdowns. He was also a leading defender for Bullard with 63 tackles and five interceptions.
“They’ve got some options they can do with their quarterback. He can throw the ball but they can also boot him out and he can tuck it and run,” Anderson said. “If we can contain him and do our responsibilities, I feel like we’ll be good.”
Moore was 8-of-10 for 93 yards, including a 48-yard touchdown reception, in the 45-14 loss to Westwood last year.
Alongside Moore is running back DeQuan Granberry, a player built for speed and agility rather than power.
“He’s kind of small, but he’s got some pretty good moves and he’s able to squeeze through areas,” Anderson said.
Despite giving up 16 points in last week’s loss to Chapel Hill, the Westwood defense held Chapel Hill four times on fourth down before giving up the first touchdown at the end of the third quarter.
“I hope we can pick up where we left off last week because I was pleased with the way the defense played,” Anderson said. “We’ve just got to take care of our technique and our responsibilities.”
The Westwood offense, which will revolve around D.J. Morrow and Tevin Watson, will go up against a split defense that Bullard runs.
The Panthers struggled against Chapel Hill, totaling 95 yards of offense, all coming in the passing game.
“These guys aren’t as big as Chapel Hill, but they run very well to the football and they are aggressive,” Anderson said.
One particular area that the Westwood coach wants to focus on is improvement on special teams.
“I’m hoping we can improve our special teams play because our kickoff return team was our weakest,” Anderson said. “We need to take care of the football.”
