Area teams finish season Friday (Area Previews)

Frankston and Elkhart are hoping that an end to the 2009 season can be on a positive note.

The two Anderson County schools are out of the playoff race in District 19-2A as the teams face one another Friday night at Elkhart High School.

Frankston’s playoff hopes came to an end last week with a loss to Garrison.

With a win Friday night, the Indians (4-5, 1-3) will finish the season at .500. Frankston was 3-2 during non-district play and opened district with a win over Troup but has lost three straight to West Rusk, Alto and Garrison.

Frankston primarily has been a running team this season with Dedtrick Smith rushing for 648 yards and eight touchdowns. Treston Coleman has rushed for 594 yards and Jamal Allen has 539 yards.

The Indians did show an ability to throw the ball against Garrison as Allen passed for a season-high 230 yards and two touchdowns. Smith had three catches for 117 yards and a touchdown.

Elkhart (0-4, 1-8) tries to end the season on a positive note and end a seven-game losing streak. The Elks have not won since defeating Huntington in the second week of the season.

The Elks have had a tough time during district play, being outscored 128-17.



Penelope at Oakwood



The Oakwood Panthers finish the season Friday night hosting undefeated Penelope.

Oakwood (2-2, 6-3) can finish tied for second place in district with a win Friday night. However, with only two teams making it to the playoffs from six-man football, Oakwood will not make the playoffs because the Panthers do not own any of the tiebreakers.

The Panthers were knocked out of the playoff race last week in a 71-49 loss to Avalon. The Eagles scored 27 straight points in the fourth quarter to get the win.

Oakwood’s James Edwards is closing in on 1,000 rushing yards, needing 101 yards against Penelope to reach that plateau. Edwards, who has rushed for an average of 9.9 yards a carry, has scored 20 touchdowns this season.

Penelope (4-0, 9-0) is coming off a 51-40 win over Trindiad to take control of the district lead. Penelope has outscored its opponent 458-148.
