H.S. Track & Field: Neches, Oakwood sending big groups to area meet

A large contingent from Neches will compete at the area track meet in Cushing Wednesday, after advancing out of the District 21-A meet last week.

Haley Harroff will compete in three events Wednesday after winning three golds at the district meet. Harroff won both the 3,200 and 1,600 meters and, along with Emily Harrod, Kyriah Starling and Macy Morton, ran on the 800-meter relay team that also took first.

Harrod also will compete in three events, adding the 200 meters and long jump to her schedule.

Also advancing to area were Emily Couch (800 meters) and Kelsee Wade (discus).

On the boys side, Nathan Lightwell won the 110-meter hurdles to advance, and also ran on the 1,600-meter relay with Juan Hernandez, Diego Hernandez and Simon Traylor.

Lightwell also advanced to area in both the 300-meter hurdles and the high jump.

Juan and Diego Hernandez ran with Jasper Henderson and Dakota Kincade on the 400-meter relay team that finished fourth to advance to area, while Harley Oakley-Collins, Juan Hernandez, Kincade and Henderson ran on the 800-meter relay team that finished second.

Oakley-Collins also finished third in the 300-meter hurdles to advance to area, while Matthew McLaughlin finished second in the 1,600 meters.

OHS SHOWS WELL AT DISTRICT

Also getting ready to send a large group to area is Oakwood, after the Panthers competed in their district meet last week.

On the girls’ side, Candace Hudson will compete at all five of her events in area after a strong showing at district. Hudson won the long jump and ran on the gold medal-winning 800-meter relay with Tenicia Edwards, Jasime Willis and Janna Campbell.

Hudson, Edwards, Campbell and Morgan Mulson also won the 400-meter relay, and Hudson finished second in the triple jump and the 100 meters.

Campbell finished second to Hudson in the long jump, while she won the 200 meters to advance to area.

Willis was second in the 200 and third in the long jump, and Mulson finished fourth in the long jump and third in the 100 meters.

Also advancing were Shametris Owens, who finished fourth in the shot put, and Makayla Troyer, who finished fourth in the 100-meter hurdles.

On the boys’ side, Louis Collins also will compete in five events.

Collins, Damiyne Durham, Shaquille Caldwell and Christian Brummett all ran on the gold-winning 400-meter relay team, while Collins won the pole vault, the discus and the 110-meter hurdles, and finished second in the 300-meter hurdles.

Durham and Caldwell will compete in four events at the meet.

Durham won the high jump and 400 meters as well, while finishing second in the triple jump. Caldwell also will advance in the high jump and triple jump, along with the 800-meter relay, which he ran with LaMarcus Newsome, Maurice Emanuel and Brummett.

Brummett also ran in the 100 meters, finishing third and moving on to area.

SCHEDULE CHANGE

The area meet scheduled for Palestine’s Wildcat Stadium on Thursday has been moved to Wednesday in an effort to avoid inclement weather.

The meet, which will include athletes from Districts 19- and 20-3A, will begin with field events at 11 a.m. Wednesday. Running finals begin with the 3,200 meters at 11:15 a.m., with all other running events beginning at 3 p.m. with the 400-meter relay.
