H.S. Basketball: Westwood wins its first basketball game of the season (Boys)

PALESTINE —

The Westwood Panthers boys basketball squad won its first game of the season on Friday night against the Wills Point Tigers, 59-46.

Westwood, who recently got back junior Damontrey House, went on a tear at Wills Point as House finished second on the team in points with 13.

Westwood was off to a great start in the first quarter as it jumped out to a 16-11 lead. Come halftime, Westwood had double its score at 32 and had outscored the Tigers by an eight-point margin to bring the halftime score to 32-19.

Panthers coach Scott Nettles said after the game that he was impressed with his team’s performance, as they were able to play as a whole team.

“Well, it’s the first time that we’ve had everyone together,” Nettles said. “I definitely think we played a lot better, and we felt like we were more complete than we were for the first two games.”

The third quarter saw a slight dip in Westwood’s scoring as it only put up 11 points to Wills Point’s 14 and the Panthers saw their lead cut to 10.

In the fourth quarter, Westwood went back to its 16-point quarter scheme and beat out Wills Point by three to win by 13 points. Coach Nettles said he was proud of his team’s performance, but knows there’s more to come.

“We’re 1-2 on the season now,” Nettles said. “And we have Mexia on our schedule next.”

With Thanksgiving coming up this week, Westwood is looking to make a statement with a home win against Mexia on Tuesday night before the week-long break.
