H.S. Baseball/Softball: Herrod's gem lifts Palestine over Groesbeck

With the Palestine baseball team’s playoff positioning hanging in the balance, the Wildcats needed a big-time performance on Friday.

They got just that.

Chico Herrod pitched a complete game, one-hitter, striking out 12 as the Wildcats knocked off Groesbeck, 3-0.

The win was Palestine’s first in District 19-3A, and the loss was Groesbeck’s first in district as well.

Angel Trejo finished with a hit and an RBI, while both Herrod and Ryan Zavala were 1-for-3 at the plate.

Palestine hosts Mexia today, with a chance to move to 2-1 in district. Mexia has yet to win a district game.

Junior varsity action begins at 4:30 p.m., with the varsity to follow.

ELKHART 19, Woden 0

For the second-time this season, Jordan White refused to allow a hit to an opponent.

Two weeks after tossing a perfect game, the Elkhart senior and Howard College-commit allowed only one baserunner — a fifth inning walk — as he led the 10th-ranked Elkhart baseball team to a 19-0 win over Woden Friday.

White also helped his own cause at the plate, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs.

Elkhart (16-3, 3-0) travels to Groveton today, with action beginning at 4:30 p.m. with the JV game.

CAYUGA 15, LaPoynor 5

For the first time in district play, the Cayuga baseball team appeared to be getting a true test Friday from LaPoynor.

That is, until the sixth inning.

Chandler Rigdon, Hunter Jenkins and John Vickery all hit home runs in the inning, as the Wildcats exploded for nine runs to turn a 6-5 lead into a 15-5, mercy-rule victory over the Flyers.

Jaret and Brayden Walthall both had three hits for the Wildcats, while Hunter Johnson moved to 3-0 on the season in picking up the win in relief.

Cayuga (10-2, 4-0) travels to Neches today to take on the Tigers. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
