H.S. Baseball/Softball: Herrod's gem lifts Palestine over Groesbeck

Groesbeck 13, PALESTINE 1 (Fri.)

The Groesbeck softball team, ranked No. 23 by the Texas Girls’ Coaches Association, was too much for visiting Palestine Friday.

Despite an early 1-0 lead after the first inning for the Ladycats, Groesbeck scored 13 runs in the next three frames for the 13-1, mercy-rule shortened victory.

Amber Magee had two hits in the loss for Palestine.

Palestine rebounded with a 10-2 victory over county rival Cayuga Saturday behind three hits a piece from Gabby Hudson, Shelby Gabbard and Magee.

Dana Whitehead, Nicole Thompson and Courtney Grimes each drove in two runs in the victory for the Wildcats who got seven quality innings inside the pitching circle from Liz Cone.

Despite taking the loss, Cayuga freshman Kimberly Hughes recorded a game-high eight strikeouts.

Palestine hosts Mexia today. Games begin at 4:30 p.m. with JV action, followed by the varsity. Cayuga is off today and hosts Cross Roads Friday, beginning with JV action at 4 p.m.
