H.S. Volleyball: Palestine loses at home to Canton, 3-1

PALESTINE — The Lady Wildcats volleyball team just didn’t have enough spark in them to come away with the victory, losing three out of four sets to Canton at home Tuesday.

Palestine started off slowly as Canton pulled away in the first set, winning it 25-16.

Palestine coach Lisa Hampton said there was one main reason as to why the Lady Wildcats couldn’t come away with an early victory.

“We weren’t really passing the ball that well, and we shanked a lot of serves in the beginning,” Hampton said.

The second set saw a lot of the same things that the first set saw. Palestine wasn’t able to figure out how to block the kills of the taller Canton players, and it ended up hurting the team as it fell 25-17 in the second set.

The third set was where the tides starting turning.

Palestine got off to an 8-0 start and continued applying pressure to make it 15-5. Hampton said she was proud of her team’s improvements in the third set.

“We came back and played better in the third set and were able to win that and get a confidence booster,” Hampton said.

The Lady ‘Cats were able to finish off a third set rally by Canton and come away with the set, winning 25-20.

“The key to the game is being able to pass the ball,” Hampton said. “I thought in the third set we were able to do that a lot better than we had in the previous two sets, and I think that’s why we won that set.”

However, in the fourth set, Canton’s tall front line proved to be too much for Palestine to handle.

“We honestly just couldn’t find an answer for their tall girl,” Hampton said.

Canton won the fourth set 25-13, and Palestine came away from the match with a few lessons learned.

“We’re really just trying to get better at blocking,” Hampton said. “We have to be able to shut down the taller girls. We also need to work a little bit on our serves and serve receives.”
